Seto ware censer

Early Edo period (17th century)

Donated by the Homma family

This Seto ware censer has a bat on the lid. The bat represents long life, and is also used as a symbol to ward off evil spirits. In Chinese, the kanji for bat (蝠) and happiness(福) are both pronounced “fū,” which is why bats are very popular as an auspicious motif.
