Tanba ware katatsuki tea container named Ulala

Early Edo period (17th century)

Donated by the Homma family

This Tanba ware katatsuki tea container was fired in Sasayama, in present-day Hyogo Prefecture. The origin of the name Ulala is unknown.

The Tamba ware kilns are said to have first been established at the end of the Heian period. By the early Edo period, everyday utensils and tea utensils were being fired there using a combination of red, ash, and black glazes unique to Tanba ware. Later, tea ceremony utensils known as Enshū Tanba, which were favored by Enshū Kobori (a famous tea master held in high regard by feudal lords), were also produced there. A production system unique to Tanba ware was established around the middle of the Edo period.
