Sōnyū
Early to mid-Edo period (17th century–18th century)
Donated by the Homma family
This black Raku ware tea bowl is said to be a replica of Chojirō’s Tōyōbō. This replica was made by Kyōto potter Sōnyū (1664–1716), a fifth-generation member of the Raku family.
The name Tōyōbō is thought to have come from the fact that the original tea bowl belonged to Nagamori Tōyōbō, a great disciple of Sen no Rikyū (the politically influential tea master who first codified the chanoyu way of tea ceremony).
