Bush clover, maki-e gold-lacquered drum vase

Artist Shunshō Yamamoto (first generation)

Early Edo Period (17C)

Donated by the Homma family

What you see here is the body of a kotsuzumi (small drum), said to have been made by Yamamoto Shunshō, a first-generation maki-e lacquer artist in the early Edo period. Adorning the black lacquerware are autumn bush clover flowers and chrysanthemums, painted in gold and silver in the maki-e style. One noteworthy feature is the fact that later years saw the leather on each side peeled off, so it could be used as a vase.

Formerly in the ownership of Matsudaira Buemon, a Shōnai clan retainer, it was acquired by the Homma family from the Sakai family in May 1911.
