Hina Dolls displayed on Multi-Tiered Dankazari Doll Stand from Rinshō-ji Temple

Late Edo period–Meiji period

Donated by Rinshō-ji Temple

This multi-tiered ‘dankazari’ doll stand features dolls crafted by Ohki Heizo, master doll-maker at Maruhei Ohki, a doll shop in Kyoto. Founded in 1779, Maruhei has been one of the most influential doll-makers in Japan.

Also on the doll stand is a set of ‘gonin-bayashi’ depicting a group of five musicians; they are said to have been made by the famed doll-maker Hara Shugetsu II (1768?–1844).
