The Isho Ningyo, or ‘costume doll’, was a generic term used for dolls costumed in dyed textiles or cloth. The faces were normally crafted by puppeteers while other specialists handled the task of putting the costume onto the doll.
These dolls were made for adults, rather than children to enjoy, something which the high level of sophistication and artistry reflects. They also offer valuable insights into the customs of the time.
