Sagara Doll

Bunsei period (1818–1830)

Donated by Akino Yoko

These clay dolls were first produced by Sagara Seizaemon Atsutada, retainer of the Yonezawa clan in Yamagata Prefecture, during the Kansei era (around 1790). They are largely small in size, with a charming and cute appearance. Said to have been influenced by the Fushimi dolls of Kyoto, they are regarded as one of the “three major dolls of the Tohoku region” together with the Hanamaki dolls of Iwate and Tsutsumi clay dolls of Sendai.
