Standing Doll

Genroku era (1688–1704)

Donated by Saitō Shōji

Tachibina, or standing dolls, were made in a wide variety of styles during the Edo period (1603–1868). These dolls date from the Genroku era (1688–1704). Both are male; the female doll was lost. Their clothes are decorated with peonies and chrysanthemums instead of wisteria flowers, and they wear eboshi caps (a Heian-period black-lacquered court cap), indicating that they were designed to showcase an older time period.
