Satō Chūryō
1912-2011
Born in Miyagi Prefecture. Satō Chūryō spent his childhood in Hokkaidō. He moved to Tōkyō to study painting but was so deeply moved by the new vitalist works of Auguste Rodin, Aristide Maillol and Charles Despiau, that he decided to take up sculpture. After graduating from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts he was active in the Shinseisaku Art Society. After the war, his internment experiences inspired him to produce many works portraying “the beauty of humans” in ordinary, everyday life. In 1981, he was the first Japanese to hold a solo exhibition at the Musée Rodin in Paris. His work is internationally highly regarded.
