Asō Saburō

1913-2000

Born in Tokyo. He studied at the Taiheiyō School of Fine Arts, where he began to associate with Matsumoto Shunsuke, Hasegawa Toshiyuki, Aimitsu and others. In 1938, he moved to Europe in 1938. In 1943, during the Pacific War, he and Matsumoto Shunsuke, Aimitsu, Itozono Wasaburō, Ōno Gorō and others formed the the Shinjin Gakai. They engaged in independent, expressive activities despite the rigid limits of the time. Later, in 1947, Saburō joined the Jiyū Bijutsu. He also held a duo exhibition with Mori Yoshio. From 1964, he continued his work as an independent artist. Averse to explanations, his works appeal strongly to themes of familar everyday life. His meticulous realism, found in his paintings and observations, has remained unchanged throughout his life.
