Goryeo Celadon Gourd-shaped Water Pitcher

Goryeo Dynasty (13th century period)

Donated by the Homma family

This celadon water pitcher dates back to the Goryeo dynasty (918–1391) on the Korean peninsula. These gourd-shaped pitchers were made as drinking vessels, and were popular among the aristocracy. This particular pitcher is an outstanding example of its kind, with its well-proportioned shape and exquisitely-coloured celadon glaze.

The main body is covered in peony designs, with lotus flowers carved at the top and bottom. The spout has been designed to look like a lotus leaf, while the handle resembles bamboo.
