Octagonal bowl with Polychrome Overglaze Enamel Decoration Featuring Phoenix and Peony Designs

Early Edo period (Late 17th century)

Donated by the Homma family

Made in Arita, Hizen Province (present-day Saga Prefecture) in the late 17th century, this elegant bowl with overglaze decoration is characteristic of Kakiemon-style porcelain. Phoenix and peony designs can be seen in the “nigoshite” milky-white base, so named for its resemblance to cloudy water, such as that seen after washing rice.

Made primarily for export, Kakiemon-style porcelain dominated the market during the second half of the 17th century. This particular piece was acquired by the Homma family, and is regarded as one of the most valuable examples of such pieces made for the domestic market.
