These dolls are thought to have been part of the festival floats held on the grounds of Edo Castle during the Edo period (1603–1868). The festivals of Kanda Myōjin Shrine and Hie Shrine In Tokyo are classic Edo festivals; and the floats of the Kanda and Sannō Festivals were brought to the Edo Castle grounds for the shogun’s viewing pleasure.
