Boys’ Festival Dolls      Takasago

Edo period (1603–1868) Donated by Yōko Akino

These dolls represent Okina and Ouna, the spirits of the Paired Pines––the Takasago and Suminoe Pines respectively––from the Noh play “Takasago.” In the play, the main characters are an elderly couple who eventually reveal themselves to be the spirits of the two pine trees.

Since ancient times in Japan, people have believed that spirits dwell in pine trees, and celebrate the tree as a symbol of longevity for its evergreen nature. Many dolls like these were made as symbols of longevity and marital happiness.
