Okada Beisanjin

Mid to late Edo Period (18th-19th century)

Donated by Watanabe Riemon

Okada Beisanjin (1744-1820) was a literati painter of the mid-to-late Edo period. He counted the Osaka-based literati painter Okada Hankō amongst his children. Originally a rice merchant, Beisanjin was later appointed to Tsū Domain in Ise Province (modern Mie Prefecture), and is also said to have been employed as a government official working in the Osaka domanial warehouses. With his work being notable for its eccentric idiosyncrasies, Beisanjin became a lynchpin of the contemporary artistic society of Osaka.
