Ebisu Hand-weaving a Fishing Net

Written in the hand of Kōrin Ogata

Early to mid-Edo period (17th – 18th century)

Donated by Homma Norio

Ebisu, one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, is often depicted holding a fishing rod and a sea bream. In this painting, the gentle-faced Ebisu is depicted hand-weaving a fishing net, mostly in simple, elegant black ink.

Kōrin is said to have been influenced by the Muromachi period painter Sesson, who also had an interest in Zen Buddhism and ink painting.
