Large Zhangzhou ware bowl with flowers and birds

Late Ming dynasty (17th century)

Donated by the Homma family

Zhangzhou ware is a type of porcelain with overglaze painting fired primarily at the kilns near Zhangzhou in Fujian Province, China during the late Ming dynasty. The base color is red, and patterns of flowers, birds, grasses, and fish are overlaid in blue and green. The free-spirited brushwork and simple feel of this type of porcelain were favored by Japanese tea masters.
