Zhangzhou ware medium glazed dish with lotus flower motif

Late Ming dynasty (17th century)

Donated by the Homma family

This dish, which features a lotus flower motif in red overglaze, is representative of Zhangzhou ware, a style of porcelain produced primarily at kilns near Zhangzhou in Fujian Province, China during the late Ming dynasty. The expression “tenka ichi” (天下一, lit. “best in the world” ) on the dish is a Japanese one, indicating that this dish was made for the Japanese market. The detatching, insect-eaten glaze on the along the rim is also a detail to observe.
