Shino ware deep bowl

Momoyama period (17th century)

Donated by Norio Homma

Shino ware is a type of Mino ware representative of the Momoyama period and was the first white pottery in Japan. It is characterized by a white feldspar mineral glaze over an iron underglaze. Tea bowls, incense containers, other tea utensils, and bowls were the most common Mino ware items produced.

This deep bowl is covered with a thick white feldspar mineral glaze and features a motif resembling a vine growing on a hedge. The bottom has three feet attached, another characteristic of Mino ware.
