Ko-Kutani ware large tokkuri flask with shikunshi motif

Early Edo period (17th century)

Donated by Seiji Satō

Ko-Kutani ware was produced in Kutani Village in Enuma-gun, Kaga Daishō-ji Domain from the mid-seventeenth to the early eighteenth century, and is highly regarded for its artistic qualities.

The term shikunshi (lit. “four gentlemen”) refers to four highly regarded plants which serve as auspicious symbols in Japan and represent the four seasons: orchids (spring), bamboo (summer), chrysanthemums (autumn), and ume blossoms (winter).
