Tsutsumi Dolls

Place of origin: Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture

Donated by Shikano Ichio

Tsutsumi dolls are painted clay dolls created using methods based on Tsutsumi ware, a traditional form of pottery produced in Sendai. They are characterized by their elegant use of vibrant colours.

First made in what is today Aoba ward in Sendai City during the Genroku era (1688–1704), Tsutsumi dolls are considered to be some of the finest examples of clay figurines alongside Kyoto’s Fushimi dolls. Tsutsumi dolls, along with Hanamaki and Sagara dolls, are collectively known as the three major clay dolls of the Tohoku region.
