Octagonal tea kettle

Ōnishi Jōrin

Early Edo period (17th century)

Donated by the Homma family

This octagonal tea kettle by acclaimed Kyoto potter Ōnishi Jōrin (1590–1663) is similar in style to a shin’nari gama, the standard form of tea kettle used in tea ceremony. Each side depicts a beautiful landscape delicately painted on with a spatula, after the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, a classic subject in Chinese painting. They resemble elegant ink paintings, which makes this kettle suitable for Chinese-style tea ceremonies.

This kettle was formerly in the collection of the Sakai family — who ruled over the Shōnai Domain — and was acquired by the Homma family via the Satō family in Sakata.
