Large dish with five-colored dragon and flower motif

Late Ming dynasty (17th century)

Donated by Norio Homma

This large dish is boldly decorated with dragon motifs in red, blue, green, and black overglaze on top of  a thick, milky-white glaze with a floral motif throughout. This thickly glazed five-color ware with intricate pictorial designs is called Zhangzhou ware (gosu-akae in Japanese) and was loved by Japanese tea masters of the time.
