Norinaga Motoori (1730-1801) was a leading scholar of Japanese literature and a physician during the Edo period who studied The Tale of Genji and Kojiki (‘Records of Ancient Matters’ – Japan’s oldest historical record. He had many students nationwide, whom he strove to train.
